First Solar rises 9.21% as solar stocks rally after Democrats win control of Congress
Investors bet a Democratic House and Senate will protect clean energy incentives, lifting First Solar, Enphase and Sunrun.
First Solar (FSLR) shares were up $17.13, or 9.21%, at $203.03 as of 11:15 a.m. ET on Wednesday, compared with Tuesday's regular-session price of $185.90, as solar stocks rallied after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections.

The gains spread across the group. Enphase Energy was up 10.22% at $33.53 and Sunrun was up 7.78% at the same time, based on Yahoo Finance data. Investing.com reported that First Solar is widely seen as one of the main beneficiaries of a friendlier policy backdrop as the leading U.S.-based maker of thin-film solar modules. The stock had also drawn support from a Mizuho price target increase to $328 from $324 and a recently authorized $500 million share buyback.
The broader market was rallying too. The Associated Press reported that the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 1,112 points, or 2.1%, as of 10 a.m. ET, with the S&P 500 up 1.8% and the Nasdaq composite up 2.4%. Not every corner joined in: Schwab noted that chip and AI-related stocks were mixed amid concerns about tighter rules on data center construction.
The solar move is about expectations, not new laws. A divided government still has to pass any legislation, and the president keeps his veto. For now, investors are treating the result as lowering the risk that existing renewable energy incentives get cut back.
